Last Notes from Dan the Trail Guy for 2005 (#53)

I hope that everyone had a great holiday break and that you are all rested up and ready to start 2006.

It seemed like everyone had a great run on Christmas Eve. Good turn out in terms of numbers. The rain even managed to stay away for the better part of the day. The ROC Mountain Biking was well attended on the 27th, with close to a dozen people showing up for the ride. A good mix of guys and gals.

Don’t forget that Sunday is the…….NEW YEARS DAY RUN & DIP – 11:00 am – 6 km – Cinnamon Buns – Hot Chocolate. This year there are expected to be over 100 runners and a fair number of dippers as well. It all starts at Westwood Lake. 11:00 Am. One lap of the lake…6km, then an optional dip in the lake. Prizes are awarded on a draw basis….No time is kept…….a fun run in the true sense of a fun run. Let’s have lots of ROC & Bastion members show up. The details for this Saturdays trail run are at the bottom of the page

Couple of new things to bring to your attention, most of it is physical in nature…..sorry!
1. Water Running – Denise Miller recently went down to a "Water Running" clinic in Sooke and is pretty excited about having classes out of NAC. Maurya Tatler (Aquatic Programmer) and Denise are starting classes on Sunday, January 8th at 10:30 a.m. The class will be 45 minutes long. It's geared to ALL levels of fitness. Tri-Athletes are welcome too as some of the moves in the class will be sport specific. Denise would like to invite any ROC members to the pool during this time slot. She will permit a maximum of 30 people in each class - so first come - first serve. Her hope is that runners in particular, will start incorporating the "Water Running" and "Tri-It! Water Running" classes into their weekly workouts. As a lifeguard/fitness instructor Denise sees many individuals that she knows from running clubs and Tri-Athletes who show up at the pool to do water running. Most of these individuals are there because of an injury. She would like to promote injury prevention and she believes working out in the water with proper form and technique will help with some of those injuries incurred in training.

2. January 14th – ROC AGM – 10:00 am, ABC Country Restaurant – Breakfast Buffet available. Proceeded by a run of the Lantzville Foothills. Please attend.

3. AB Classes – Thursday Nights 6:30PM Starting January 12 and Monday Mornings 6:30AM Starting January 16 - The cost is $20 for five sessions, and the classes run in five week blocks and are one hour long. To register people can Sean at seanlunny@shaw.ca

It starts at 10 am from the Malaspina Gymnasium (Bld. 190) and runs around Colliery Dam and then heads along Wakesiah to 3rd street. Then it goes around the back side of the track along the Parkway and back to the gym. It is free and will have some great prizes and coffee from Jumpin' Java.

This weeks trail run…..December 31st, NY Eve – Duomont Trails – 8:00 am – a little bit later start in order to allow the sun a few extra minutes to get up in the sky. If you want to ride, drop me a note and I will hook you up with the guys that will probably be riding that day. We will meet as usual at the yellow gate. Directions – From the NORTH End - Take Duomont Rd off of Metral Drive, go past the Black Bear Pub and keep on driving for at least another 5 minutes. You will come to a T Junction in the Road. This is Biggs Rd. Turn Right and head up the hill. Drive until you come to a yellow gate on your right hand side just before the Wastelands Motto Cross. This is just as the road starts to flatten out. - From the SOUTH End– Turn left at the Jingle Pot/Mostar Exit. Quickly turn right onto Biggs road and head out past the Correctional Institute. Follow this road past the Brannon Lake Campground and head up the hill. Stay on this road all the way up the hill until you come to a yellow gate just before the Wastelands Motto Cross, this is just as the road starts to flatten out.

Notes from Dan the Trail Guy #52

Trail Bits

Congratulations to Norm & Wendy on their wedding and congratulations to Steve Osiaduk on his 7th place finish at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on the weekend. Norm & Wendy now get to head off on their honeymoon while Steve gets to start training for the World Championships taking place in Japan this coming April. The trail run in Nanoose drew another large crowd with close to 40 people venturing to Nanoose for the run. Reports of a Beaver sighting (?), frozen ponds, long climbs and beautiful views were turned in at coffee afterwards. It sounds like we have some nice additions to our inventory of run locations, if you have a route you want to take the group on let me know. Please remember to send in/hand in/mail in/drop off your membership renewal…Only $10.00

Don’t Forget the Bastion Running Club’s Run & Dip on New Years Day…………Westwood Lake…….11:00 am…..!!!

Plus BONUS ROC Boxing Day (Monday) Trail Run…7:30 am Westwood Lake…Westwood Ridge run….this will give you a good chance to burn off all that junk you ate and drank on Christmas Day

Runners of Compassion issues – I have attached two items in addition to the membership renewal for you to review. One is a letter of apology we received and one is an update in regards to the issue of a wheelchair division being in the 2006 race. I have posted copies at Frontrunners for you to review as well.

Frontrunners Clinic – Dec 6th this is the last clinic of 2005. As is tradition it will be some sort of a "secret" run. Usually a great "adventure". Please bring items for the food bank instead of the usual $2 as everything (food and $$) collected goes to the Christmas food bank in Nanaimo. Après clinic beverages at The Longwood Brewpub. Tuesday Night Clinics re-start on January 10th. There are still a few spots left in the half marathon and full marathon training clinics as well as the clinic for those wanting to give the longer distances a first attempt.

Hamperville – keeping in the tradition of ROC, the crowd is pretty evenly split on giving an answer to a question. Therefore I have spoken with Hamperville and we can have people show up at either time. Thursday Night (Dec 15th 6:00pm – 8:00pm) or Saturday afternoon (Dec 17th 2:00pm – 4:00pm) Please feel welcome to bring kids, family members, friends etc, the more the merrier they say. So take your pick

* there is a van leaving from Frontrunners at 4:00pm if you want to go. Room for 8.

Runners of Compassion Bursary – On behalf of the Directors and Members of Runners of Compassion – Nanaimo Chapter, I am happy to announce that as a result our on going fund raising efforts we have been able to commit to two $1000.00 School District 68 Bursaries. One each will be awarded to a male & female Nanaimo student in financial need who has registered with a post secondary institution. There is a full written criteria available at the School Board offices.

Stewart Mountain Cross Country – is this Saturday at Thetis Lake Park. This is the next step up from the Gunner Shaw. http://pih.bc.ca/StewartMountain.html This baby is 10 miles in length (16km) and features lots and lots of single track, puddles, branches rocks and streams but most of it is very runnable wilderness trail. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Trail Run Leaders – as our trail runs become more and more popular, the needs to have more people take on leadership responsibilities is becoming very evident. I spoke with Brad and a couple of the other regular group leaders on the weekend and we all felt that if we had a few more people that were comfortable with leading the moderate paced and easy paced groups we could better accommodate the larger groups that are showing up and at the same time offer a more comfortable running environment/pace for everyone……….. If you are interested in talking about being a leader drop me a line. Everyone needs to remember that the original intent of the Saturday Trail run was that it was to be a social-group run. It was not the intent to have the Saturday morning run become the Saturday morning hard workout. Yes, we can push our selves while we are out, but lets not lose sight of why we get together.

This weeks run….7:30 am ……Westwood Lake…an hour and 20 or so.
