Trail Bits

The Gals and Guys of ROC Rocked at the Gunner Shaw on Saturday. Several people finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their respective age groups, plus we had a couple of top ten overall finishers in the male and female divisions. Fantastic! Too Bad the weather was so crappy for all of you. Who wants a beautiful sunny day when you are running cross country? I eagerly wait to hear “the dirt” on how the race went and how deep the “puddle” was. That puddle is cold and smelly no matter what kind of weather you get.

FYI….. That was Norm’s last race as a single man. This coming Saturday he and Wendy are getting married…..Congratulations to both of them.

The turn out at Westwood was the smallest in ROC History…6 people showed up. 1 biked, 2 walked, and 3 ran.

Don’t Forget the Bastion Running Club’s Run & Dip on New Years Day…Westwood Lake

Runners of Compassion Bursary – On behalf of the Directors and Members of Runners of Compassion – Nanaimo Chapter, I am happy to announce that as a result our on going fund raising efforts we have been able to commit to two $1000.00 School District 68 Bursaries. One each will be awarded to a male & female Nanaimo student in financial need who has registered with a post secondary institution. There is a full written criteria available at the School Board offices.

Nanaimo Give & Go! – December 1st, 5:00pm – 7:00pm (longer if you choose to come back to Longwood afterwards for dinner) – I know that in the past we have had too many people well this year I am starting to panic. If you are coming please let me know. I know that a number of you have said you may come, but right now I have only had 3 people take the time to let me know they will actually be helping…. Don’t forget to drive buy and drop off your donations of food and clothing on Thursday. The shelters are in desperate need of winter coats, toques and warm socks. Please check you closets and drop off those items that you and your family don’t use anymore.

Frosty Foot Race – December 4th Bowen Park Contact Sherri Wade at WadeS@MALA.BC.CA .Proceeds to youth sports. There will be a child minding service available at this event.

Bryan Adams Benefit Concert- I don’t have any more details to pass along as of yet. As soon as I have them I will pass along the information to you. One thing I do know is that I am going to be looking for a number of volunteers to work during and after the concert. After the concert is over all the chairs on the floor have to be removed as does the wood from on top of the ice, the stands need sweeping and the Plexiglass needs to be re-installed, etc. Minor Hockey has graciously agreed to release the use of the arena to the Coalition on the Saturday, but we have promised that we will have the arena back in use for them by Sunday morning.

This Weeks Run – I have finalized details with Lynn & Kathy concerning their leading the group on a “NEW” run of the trails in Nanoose. We are good to go this Saturday…7:30 am. Lynn will run in all conditions. It will take you no more than 15 minutes to get from Chapters to the Trail Head.
Long Directions. Here they are...
· Head towards Parksville (hopefully that is a given) and turn right at the Petro Canada station.
· Follow the road up and over the two sets of railroad tracks.
· Take the first road on the right after the tracks this is Powder Point Road.
· Head towards Fairwinds Golf Course.
· You will pass St. Mary’s church on the right, then you will pass OZERO ACRES FARM on the left and then head up a big hill.
· Keep going until you reach a four way stop sign. There are big signs here that say Fairwinds on them at this point. Keep Straight
· Go straight for about .2 km and on the left there is a gravel parking lot with a wooden rustic fence here. This is the parking lot!
· The trail head is here! Park very tightly together please as the lot is not terribly large.

Notes from Dan the Trail guy NUMBER 50!!!!

Trail Bits

Well it was a day of Running, Biking, Voting & Dancing on Saturday as originally planned.

Sean’s Bike course was about 2 hours in length, with lots of emphasis being given to the basic skills required to properly & safely ride off road. We worked on proper body position and gearing for hill climbs and descents; we worked on how to ride the trails and lift/jump your front tire over an obstacle and then how to kick up your back tire over as well. We addressed safety issues, what to take when heading out on a trail ride, etc. A couple of the guys even worked on how to not so gracefully flip themselves over their handle bars. All in all it was very informative and I know that we all came away from the course having learnt something new…..Thanks Sean…we raised $100.00 for ROC

The Long Run was spectacular from all reports. The group of about 20 headed into Boomerang Lake for what ended up being a 2 hour and 10 minute run. After the first 30-40 minutes, which was all climbing (as forewarned) the group ran down in towards the lake and was greeted to sunshine, a completely calm lake with bits of mist floating about and even a couple of swans (I think that was Derek & Brad in their Swan Lake costumes) The majority of people on the run commented that it was “the best trail run yet”…thanks Derek

The Short Run group ran for about 1 hour and 30 minutes and managed to not run on the poop trails. There was some confusion apparently in terms of the toughness of the run. Even though the run maybe purported to be a short run, it does not necessarily mean that it will be an easy run. If I gave you the impression that the short run was going to be easy I apologize.

Dancing….well what more can be said. Fantastic Party…thanks to the social butterflies of Roc & Bastion (Kathleen, Judy, Darla, Carrie, Karen, Iona, Linda, Anne, Charline, Steve, Darrell, Brad) Fantastic Food….Thanks to Alex Berlingette and her staff at Carrot on the Run, Great Music….thanks to Ron from RSM Productions, Great Door Prizes……thanks to Derek & Karen Riley – Riley Construction, Karla Davies – Zulak Financial, Tammy Phye – Lifestyle Harmony, Barry Roscoe – North Douglas Sysco Foods, Longwood Brew Pub, Mt. Washington Alpine Resort. Fantastic People…..all of you! You all looked Marvelous!!!!!!! As Ross stated in the Bastion email, black is still the colour to wear. All in all it was a great time; I think the final number of people attending was over 160 people. Special Thanks to Ross Palfery for so patiently sitting at the door taking tickets and membership renewals for both Bastion & ROC. Please remember to get yours in before the end of the year.

Yvonne Visser emailed me from god only knows where today, wanting some dirt on what happened at the party. Sadly there was nothing to report to her, everyone was so very well behaved. This according to the bartenders was amazing considering the volume of bar sales. They were very impressed with the amount of alcohol that such an athletic bunch of people could consume.

Nanaimo Give & Go! – December 1st, 5:00pm – 7:00pm (longer if you choose to come back to Longwood afterwards for dinner) – We need a dozen or so people to help with the traffic control. Please email me if you are planning on helping with this.

Gunner Shaw Cross Country Race – if you are heading down for the race and want to car pool, then meet at the Tim Horton’s in the Southgate Shopping Plaza at 10:45am. The race starts at 1:00pm. We should have you back in Nanaimo by 4:30ish. Remember to bring a COMPLETE CHANGE of clothes and shoes.

Runners of Compassion Annual General Meeting – will take place on January 14th at 10:00am. Location T.B.A. This will again be an après run, breakfast meeting. We seem to get the largest turn out for a meeting when we combine our meeting with running and food, which doesn’t’ surprise me. If you are interested in standing for a position on the Board of Directors of ROC please forward your name to Kelly McKee, the President of ROC Nanaimo kemckee@shaw.ca . If you would like more information in terms of what is the expected of you as a Director, what the time commitments are, etc please contact either Kelly or myself or any of the other ROC Directors.

This Weeks Run – If you are not coming down to The Gunner Shaw Cross Country race the meeting place for this weekends run will be Westwood lake Parking Lot at 7:30 am. This may end up being an unguided group run depending on who shows up for the run, as all of the usual suspects that lead the Saturday runs are apparently coming down for the Gunner Shaw. I am just finalizing details with Dr. Leuke and Ms. Barber concerning their leading the group on a “NEW” run of the trails in Nanoose. The tentative date for this run would be December 3rd.

Request for Volunteers: ROC has been asked if we will provide volunteers and/or runners to help with the following races. Please support them if you can.
Women Run Wild – November 27th, North Oyster Elementary School. Contact Carol Roy at 753-5844 or via email at mcroy@telus.net Proceeds to Haven House
Frosty Foot Race – December 4th Bowen Park Contact Sherri Wade at WadeS@MALA.BC.CA .Proceeds to youth sports. There will be a child minding service available at this event. I think this is what use to be called babysitting…????

Early Warnings
· NOV 27 Women Run Wild – Girls only. Annual fund raiser for Haven House. Details at Frontrunners or via Women’s Pace website.

Notes from Bastion Ross--Party--Events

Dear Bastion

What a great dance this Saturday! It goes to prove, however, that if you give a slug a deadline they will ignore it and do whatever they damn well please. I had three requests for tickets that morning at the lake. It was a great turn out with 73 members from both Bastion and ROC packing the very festively decorated Legion Hall in. The gentlemen were looking spiffy while the ladies were certainly dressed to kill. Apparently, black is the new black.
Now, during the course of the evening, some of you drank too much, some of you ate too much and some of you danced too much. A few of you managed all three. That's exactly the kind of effort we were looking for. There were interesting party games such as "Name That Food?" and some interesting draw prizes. Sadly, I'm disappointed with Dave Shillabeer. Having spent the past two weeks sucking back Margaritas and lying in the sun in Mexico at his daughter's wedding, Dave lacked the simple, common decency to turn down the grand draw prize of a weekend for two at a posh resort in Tofino. I expected more out of you, Dave.
A big thanks goes out to Judy Orosz and Kathleen Richardson for organizing the dance. Also, thanks to the Legion and its staff for their patient services, Alex Berlingette and her staff at Carrot on the Run for the endless food, and the D.J. for playing great music.
This Sunday, Nov. 27th, Women's Pace is sponsoring the Run Wild 10K for Haven House. This is for ladies only and the race starts at 9:00 A.M. at North Oyster School. The directions are, from the south, turn onto Cedar Rd. at the Omega Restaurant (after the airport) and the school is on the left about 2K. You can register at Frontrunners with race package pickup there on Saturday the 26th from 10-4. Race day registration, 8:00 -8:30 A.M. Online registration and information;
http://communities.msn.ca/womenspace
Or email womenspace@shawlink.ca

Pacific Sports is putting on the Frosty Foot Race on December 4th at Bowen Park. This perennial favorite features a 10K race, a 5K run/walk, and a 1K Tot Trot (10 and under). The Tot Trot starts at 9:45 A.M. and then at 10:00 A.M. there will be free child minding so the parents can run the 5 or 10 K. Sherri always does a great job with this and there is plenty of hot chocolate and cinnamon buns after. You can pick up registration forms at Frontrunners or the Pacific Sports building at Malaspina College. You can call 753-3245 ext1-2649 or email island@pacificsport.com . Online registration;

Notes from Dan Update.

Great news, the short run will now be at Dumont as well. Mr. Dennis Frey has graciously agreed to lead a shorter run of the Duomont Trails on Saturday. Dennis’s run will be about 60-75 minutes. Same start time and same starting place as the long run.
· 7:30am Start at the Yellow Gate on Duomont Rd, near the Wasteland Motto Cross.
· Directions – From the NORTH End - Take Duomont Rd off of Metral Drive, go past the Black Bear Pub and keep on driving for at least another 5 minutes. You will come to a T Junction in the Road. This is Biggs Rd. Turn Right and head up the hill. Drive until you come to a yellow gate on your right hand side just before the Wastelands Motto Cross. This is just as the road starts to flatten out.
- From the SOUTH End– Turn left at the Jingle Pot/Mostar Exit. Quickly turn right onto Biggs road and head out past the Correctional Institute. Follow this road past the Brannon Lake Campground and head up the hill. Stay on this road all the way up the hill until you come to a yellow gate just before the Wastelands Motto Cross, this is just as the road starts to flatten out.
· Coffee at Starbucks afterwards.

Volunteers Needed (From Bastion)

Our club is looking after the finish line/results for the Nanaimo Track & Field Club's Sea Wall Race on November 19th. We need to have some volunteers to help with the set up, take down and manning the finish chute. Approximately 4-6 volunteers are required. This event is taking place the day after our joint winter dance with Runners of Compassion. If you are interested in helping, please advise me ASAP.

Thanks for considering....Steve Gagliano.
P.S. They are also looking for about 6 course marshals that day as well.

Kona Bicycle Company Partners with "The Fabulous Women of Velo Bella"

The Kona Bicycle Company partners with
“The fabulous women of Velo Bella”

Team Velo Bella-Kona 2-year deal includes addition of Wendy Simms to roster

Welcome “reception” this Friday at Surf City Gran Prix Cyclo-Cross

KONAWORLD (Nov. 15, 2005) – The Kona Bicycle Company today announced a new two-year partnership with the fabulous women of Velo Bella – the California-based collective of professional bicycle racing teams and clubs. The new Team Velo Bella-Kona partnership will encompass Velo Bella’s professional road racing team, professional mountain bike racing team, and elite level cyclo-cross team, known as the “Flamingo Flock”.

Adding to the already deep talent and fun pool, Kona rider Wendy Simms will be joining Team Velo Bella-Kona for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The Velo Bella-Kona partnership will also support Velo Bella’s recreational and amateur racing clubs around the United States as well as Velo Bella’s numerous camps and clinics.

In classic Velo Bella and Kona style, a semi-official celebration and “reception” in honor of the new relationship will take place in Santa Cruz above the Bicycle Trip, 1127 Soquel Avenue. The “reception” will feature DJs from San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland and Santa Cruz. Kona Brewing Company Longboard Lager will be served and the party goes from 9 until it ends…

Kona team manager, Mark Peterson, said that, like every solid relationship, Velo Bella-Kona was destiny. “This relationship is a natural. The Velo Bella culture is a lot like Kona in that it’s all about bringing fun to the sport. Kona is fun and Velo Bella is fun so we’re in for a lot of it.” said Peterson. “We’re proud to call Velo Bella partners and ambassadors and look forward to supporting their mission in any way possible.”

“When Kona contacted us initially we were in the midst of coordinating our Surf City race”, explains team co-founders, Sabine Dukes and Laura Sanchez, “We were going through our boxes of hula skirts, coconut bras, and leis, and thought well how perfect is this partnership?” Sanchez adds, “We've waited a long time to attract a sponsor that appreciates our quirky style and charm. It’s a pivotal point for us because we now have more opportunities to support developing riders while attracting newcomers to the sport. Finding the right sponsor is a lot like finding the right coconut bra, they don't all fit...with Kona we not only have the right fit but we know Kona knows how to get their hula on.”

Team Velo Bella-Kona will be riding on a variety of Kona bicycles, including Kona new road rigs King Zing and Zing Supreme, King Supreme and Kula Supreme mountain bikes, and Team Jake cyclo-cross bikes. Additionally, Velo Bellas more than 150 club members will get special Kona deals through Kona’s authorized dealer network and grassroots racing program. Peterson reports that orders for Kings, Coilers and Stinkys are already pouring in from Velo Bella riders.

Notes from Dan the Trail Guy #49

Wow, what a great party at Frontrunners last Saturday. Good warm up for the dance. Thanks Norm, Thanks Stefan I had a blast.

Trail Bits for November 19th, 2005
It will be a day of Running, Biking, Voting & Dancing…oh what a day!
Sadly, I am unable to personally report on the weekend run as my vehicle was borrowed by my son, who didn’t manage to return it in time. The reports are that there was a large turnout again with still one or two more new faces in the crowd. I can report that the coffee at Starbucks was well attended as usual and that there was lots of idle nonsensical chatter taking place. If you are new to the group, don’t forget to join us back at Starbucks at around 9:00 after every run. This weekend you will be treated to RUNNING A NEW ROUTE….Read # 7 below for complete details.

Nanaimo Give & Go! – December 1st, 5:00pm – 7:00pm - Mark it on your calendar. We meet at the Daily News building located across the highway from the Nanaimo Golf Course.

Gunner Shaw Cross Country Race – if you are heading down for the race and want to car pool, then meet at the Tim Horton’s in the Southgate Shopping Plaza at 10:45am. The race starts at 1:00pm. We should have you back in Nanaimo by 4:30ish.

Nanaimo Track & Field Harbour Front 5Km – November 20th, starts at 10:00 am in front of the Howard Johnson Hotel. Just like the name says, it is a run of the Harbour Front Walkway. This is a fundraiser for the Track & Field Club which is raising funds to resurface the track at the Rotary Bowl. Contact Brian Foan at befoan@shaw.ca Day of race registration available.

Marathon & Half Marathon and Learn to run Clinics – I forgot to mention that along with John and Stefan's clinic, Gillian, who works at Frontrunners will be running a concurrent clinic for those 'proud back of the packer's' and true beginners looking to challenge the 1/2 and full distance for the first time. See Gillian or the store for more details.

New Trail Run – This Saturday there will be a new adventure…., BUT it will be longer than usual adventure. …………This Saturday your quest to again run the unknown will be fulfilled, as Derek Riley will lead the group on a 1 hour and 40 minute run out to Boomerang Lake and back. This run is going to be longer than what you have been running the past 4 -6 weekends and it is going to be somewhat more challenging in terms of some of the climbs in the early sections. A couple of the climbs are steep and a couple of climbs are a bit long in their ascent, but it is all runnable according to my sources….I guess you could assume that coming back will be a breeze. I would strongly recommend that you bring water and some sort of energy replacement snack or gel with you on this run. For those that don’t want to run long - I have endeavored to find another leader that would take out a group for a shorter run but have been unsuccessful. It seems that all of the experienced trail leaders either want to run the long route with Derek or are committed to the Bike Course….sorry. What we have done in the past when we are short a leader is have those folks that don’t want to run the long run meet at Westwood Lake in the parking lot at 7:30 and do a group run around the lake and into Morrell. That would be my suggestion for you this Saturday.
LONG RUN DETAILS:
Early Warnings
· NOV 26 Gunner Shaw Cross Country – Saturday November 26th, Thetis Lake Park Victoria, if you consider yourself a trail runner then you must come to this race with us. It is one of the oldest x/c trail races in BC. Draws a great crowd. Amazing course. It can be wet!!!! Put it on your calendar right now, so you don’t double book yourself.
· NOV 27 Women Run Wild – Girls only. Annual fund raiser for Haven House. Details at Frontrunners or via Women’s Pace website.
· DEC 1 Nanaimo Give & Go! – Thursday December 1st is the date of the 3rd Annual Nanaimo Give and Go!
· DEC 10 Stewart Mountain Cross Country – 10 miles on a really classic cross country course.
· DEC 4 Frosty Foot Race - December 4th, 2005, Bowen Park, Nanaimo, 10 am start, registration 9:15, 10km Run, 5km Run or Walk, 1km Tot Trot
· JAN 1st Bastion Running Club’s Run & Dip – New Years Day, Westwood Lake, Time - TBA, one lap or more of the lake, followed by a very quick dip in the lake. Rain or shine, snow or sleet, it doesn’t matter, Darrell and the Bastion crew will be there waiting for you. Great way to start off 2006.

Note from Ross about Bastion + ROC Dance

Dear Bastion

Tickets for the dance have sold well lately and we are up to 65 so far. There are a few tickets left, it is said, at Frontrunners. To date, we are expecting a total of 150 people. Just a reminder that you should have dinner before you come. There will be lots of good food, but it is appetizers, and there won't be enough if everyone loads their plates up.
The Nanaimo Track and Field Club is putting on a 5K fundraiser, on Sunday the 20th, to resurface the track. It will be on the seawall starting at 10:00 a.m. in front of the HoJo. I'm sure they would appreciate all the runners, joggers, or walkers they could get.
For any of you who would like to learn how to ride the trails, Sean Lunney is offering an "Introduction to Technical Mountain Biking" course this Saturday, at the top of Doumont, at 7:30 a.m. Should have your own bike and bring a helmet, gloves and water. Fee of $10. If you are interested contact Dan Brady, danbrady@shaw.ca

Take care,
Ross

Notes from Dan the Trail Guy #48

Two Quick Updates
1. Dance Tickets: The absolute last opportunities to get your tickets for the Runners of Compassion – Bastion Running Club WINTER DANCE is today and tomorrow. There are still a few tickets available at Frontrunners for those of you that are late in deciding (150 tickets sold so far…yahoo!!) All monies must be paid to Kathleen, Judy or dropped at Frontrunners by the end of clinic Tuesday evening. Oh, by the way, I am not a fashion consultant and therefore cannot tell you what to wear to the dance, so please stop asking me. It is a dance, so wearing your smelly running attire would probably not be a good idea. Last year there were skirts, dresses, slacks, and dress pants and sports jackets. Even a suit in the crowd if I remember correctly. Who cares what you wear, just come and have fun. Please Remember that we are not serving you dinner – just hors dourves,

Hey, please try to bring something for the food bank or a piece of warm winter clothing (coat, socks, toques, etc). If we all bring a little something, we collectively can help a lot of people.

2. Bike Course: The “Introduction to Technical Mountain Biking” course is this Saturday. Here are the details.
· Time: 7:30 am
· Location: Top of Dumont Road. Continue driving up the road past where we usually start our runs until you come to the barricade and can go no further. DO NOT BLOCK the gate please.
· You must have a helmet. Bring gloves if you have them along with a water bottle. A change of clothes is a good idea if you want to go to coffee afterwards.
· $10.00 cash or cheque. Sean is donating the proceeds of the course back to ROC…Thanks Sean.
· So far we have about 20 people coming.

Trail Bits for November 12th, 2005

Another large crowd out for the run on Saturday and yet again there were more new faces in the crowd….amazing! A Thank You goes out to Tim, Brad & Kathleen, and Mark & Stefan for leading the three individual groups that went out and did the tour of Morell. A special thank you to my guy, Bob for keeping me company on the bike. We had ample people show up to help with the work in the Loaves and Fishes warehouse. What the folks from Loaves and Fishes thought would take a crew of us about 2 hours to complete, actually took us about 25 minutes. I will send out more information later in the week about their need to have people come down and help them make up the actual Christmas hampers.

Please remember to email me any feedback you have regarding the runs. Here are a couple of comments from last week:
“I ran in the middle group, and really enjoyed it. There was some grumbling about how Brad was able to find hills to go up and none to go down, but that’s what makes us strong! Please extend my thanks to Brad and I look forward to this weekend”…………………..”I think having people come out to run on Saturday mornings is great. Fresh air, fun exercise (and often exhausting exercise for someone still trying to get used to hills and trail running), spectacular views (from some points of the trails), what's not to enjoy? It's given me a chance to see and appreciate some of the city's natural beauty”…….” I also like that the group now divides into smaller groups, with each running its own pace and route. This has been a nice change”

I have attached a 2006 Membership Renewal Form for you. Please fill all of it in so I can update your membership information. It can be dropped off to any of the ROC Executive or can be dropped off at Frontrunners. If you have just joined ROC in the past month or so, you are covered for your 2006 dues. If you are not sure of exactly how long ago you signed up, email me. You can also bring your membership form to the dance. Ross will be accepting membership renewals for both Bastion and ROC.

If you have anything that you would like to donate as a door prize for the dance, please let either myself or Kathleen Richardson know.

Lots of new information below:

Volunteers Needed

From Bastion:

Our club is looking after the finish line/results for the Nanaimo Track & Field Club's Sea Wall Race on November 19th. We need to have some volunteers to help with the set up, take down and manning the finish chute. Approximately 4-6 volunteers are required. This event is taking place the day after our joint winter dance with Runners of Compassion. If you are interested in helping, please advise me ASAP.

Thanks for considering....Steve Gagliano [gaglianos(at)shaw.ca]

P.S. They are also looking for about 6 course marshals that day as well.

Mike Vine Reports from X-Terra Maui World Champs

the XTerra world Champs took place last weekend in Maui oct 23. i had been looking forward to this event for 3 years... and moreso of late because I knew I had the form to win this one. but with the brutally hot conditions and especially the jagged lava rock and keawe thorn infested bike course i've found it always takes a bit of luck in maui , and this year's race was no exception.

It started well with a solid swim... i tucked in behind peter reid and raced out to the first buoy with the leaders. after the first of 2 loops i found i was not far off the lead pack. At T1 I came out 1 minute off the fastest split. on the bike i found my legs right away, climbing well and moving from 20th up to 3rd within the first 15 minutes. Last year's 2nd place marceau was again riding in 2nd and tagged on when i went by. we traded back and forth for a couple km until we reached an extended climb and he popped. from here it was defending champ Eneko Llanos just ahead, who i soon overtook for the lead. i continued climbing with only the tv chopper for company, and feeling within myself. this is too easy i was thinking. prior to the race i had wondered if my hardtail would be the right choice, and so far it was fine... ie the course was smooth enough. but this is maui and with the experience of 5 tries before , i knew it just wouldn't stay this easy. and then the curse of maui struck again - while pedaling in the middle ring the chain sucked up and jammed, twisting a link. this sort of thing just doesn't ever happen anywhere else... only in maui. fortunately the bike was still rideable as the gears were skipping only in the bottom 4 cogs. so i rode on, still making solid progress over 'ned's climb' on the top of the course then down the plunge.

however the course is far from over here with the new loop. still remaining were a couple short climbs then a nasty traverse to the loop point over ball sized lava rocks of all sizes. The Frenchman Lebrun caught me along here and went ahead. we were both being bounced around on our hardtails .... i was making time on the downhills and lebrun was forging ahead on the uphills. in the final 100 yards of bone rattling descent before lap point the chain skipped off and kinked itself in 2 spots. i had to get off and work the kinks out, however it was severely twisted now. it was 10 min to T2 from here and all downhill. with the gears skipping severely i nursed the bike home where i found i was in 2nd , 1:35 behind Lebrun. the win was unlikely now, but 2nd sure would be nice. while switching into my running shoes the front of my thigh seized. best way to deal with a muscle cramp is to keep moving so i did, but uh oh, the speedsters llanos and mcmahon were now bearing down, among others. the new course starts with about 4 km of exposed uphill which had me struggling. Llanos caught me near the top. the leg had loosened by now and i was starting to come back somewhat so i was able to pace off him but the damage was done- i was now down to 3rd w/ mcmahon right behind. he went by although now with 3 km of descending i was improving and striding out more. it turned out to be a close finish when mcmahon started to fade however it was not to be. 4th again was my final finish.
with the big drop in prize $$ from 2nd to 4th i'm left reflecting on what might have been. It was a freak mechanical my bike was afflicted with and not much i could have done to prevent it. So the season is done now and I'm good and ready for some R&R - which for me entails a couple months of dirtbiking and full time wrenching in the garage.

All in all it's been a successful comeback season and satisfying to know i'm running at full power once again...and the horsepower is there to take on the big guns of xterra.

Many thanks to my sponsors - Driving Magazine of Maui, Frontrunners , Schwalbe Tires, Fox Shocks.
See y'all in '06
for now,
Vineman

Notes from Dan the Trail Guy #45

Trail runs now start at 7:30 am

Remember to start out slow for the first 10 minutes.

What a gang was at the lake on Saturday. There must have been close to 50 of you, with lots of new faces in the crowd. The group was split into three before leaving the parking lot and away you all went. Two groups did the Westwood Ridges and one group did the Saddle. I apologize that we didn’t take time to do a quick introduction of everyone for those of you that are new. We will try and do that this Saturday. I would love to have some feed back regarding the runs from those of you that are new to the Saturday Trail Running Group. The next couple of runs will be based out of Westwood Lake, but will all be run on different routes. That is the beauty of having this great resource in our back yard. It offers so much variety.

Congratulations to those of you that ventured down to Shawnigan on a wet and blustery day. John Lowen was third over all. Good Work John.

Again, If you have a new trail that you would like to take us out on please email me and let me know. Any new trail runs should be at least 60-70 minutes or more in length. I will be scheduling runs to Ammonite Falls, Top Bridge - Rathtrevor Park Combo, Holland Creek (Ladysmith) and the Nanoose Hills. If you want to lead one of these runs, please let me know a date that works for you.

Helly Hansen-ROC Toques, ROC Technical Shirts & 2006 ROC Calendars - are all now in stock at Frontrunners.

Party Tickets - An amazing number of tickets have been sold. Don’t delay on getting yours. There are still some available from Frontrunners or Kathleen. If you have tickets and haven’t paid for them yet, watch out the SOCIAL COMMITTEE will be after you. Not a group of girls you want to have chasing you down. Please get your money in as soon as possible.

Thetis Lake Relays – November 11th, Remembrance Day, 1:00pm. Get your team together.

GutBuster Schedule – Happy to announce that ROC Victoria is hosting the opening race of the 2006 Frontrunners GutBuster Trail Racing Series, March 5th. Nanaimo ROC will again be hosting the season closer of the series, the Westwood Lake GutBuster Half Marathon & 8km Short Course – JULY 16th. This is the weekend after the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival so more of you should be able to race. Here is the web link for the GutBuster Series http://www.gutbustertrailrun.com and the MOMAR Adventure Racing Series http://www.mindovermountain.com

Frontrunners News - TONIGHT - They will be having an Adidas Testing Day at Frontrunners on the Tuesday night clinic.

YES you will be running the trails in Morrell this weekend, no surprise detours up to the ridges…promise! Let’s decide if we should move back to 7:00 am start time. Majority rules. Vote at the lake.

Hey, if you are like me and unable to run right now, but need to get out and do something, bring your MTB to the lake and you can join me for a ride. Nothing Technical, a lit bit of the Westwood Lake Trail, the power lines, a bit of Morell.
