Trail Bits

A very large group of people showed up for the GutBuster Ridge Run.There were a few first time ridge runners out on Saturday that I wouldlove to get some feed back from. There were also two people that wereout for their first Saturday morning ROC Trail run. What a run to chooseas your baptizing ROC Trail run. I hope you enjoyed it. It doesn't getmuch tougher than the GutBuster route.

Everything else we run will seemlike a walk in the park to you from now on.I am happy to report that Kathleen's ankle was not broken, it was a badsprain.
Special thanks go out to Brad, Steve, Russell and Russell, Lisaand Mike, Carrie and Eric for staying and assisting to get Kathleen tothe parking lot in Morrell.

Due to popular demand the NEW START TIME for the run is 6:30 AM (summertime)

1. Membership meeting - Please do not forget that May 14th is theroc MEMBERSHIP MEETING at the ABC Country Restaurant. Right after thatweekends run. We really need a good turnout of members at the breakfastmeeting.

2. Membership Dues - If you have decided that you no longer wish tobe a member of ROC please drop me a note so I can remove your name from the membership list and the email address book. For those you that arebasically forgetful please remember to.

3. The Duncan GutBuster is May 7th. This is the home of theo riginal GutBuster race and is an amazing race route. This race routestarts and finishes at a pub. Nice and close to Nanaimo. We should tryand have a bunch of us go down.

4. Runners of Compassion technical tops - The ROC Technical topshave been ordered and will hopefully be here in about three weeks if Iunderstood Stefan correctly.

5. Okay the important stuff - The Run - This week the run willagain start from the Westwood lake Parking, but this time at 6:30am. Therun will be an easier 80-90 minute run of the trails in Morell. Peoplehave been asking to be shown around a bit more in Morrell as people seemto keep getting lost in there. We can easily do 80-90 minutes in thereat an easy pace and not run the same trail twice. The long run folks canbreak off at the end and do the extra half hour around the lake at theend.

Trail Bits

It just goes to show that if you live right, good things happen to you. Thursday and Friday were horrible days with torrential rain and high winds. Saturday morning the rain and wind were still present when we hit the trail, BUT within 10 minutes of us starting our run and the weather gods realizing that we were running, the rain stopped and the wind died down (for the most part). The 30 or so people that showed up thinking that they were going to be partaking in a run with nasty weather conditions were instead treated to a great run in ideal conditions. Yes there were lots of puddles and yes the “roadies” got their nice clean road shoes dirty (mine included) but all in all it was a great run. The constant up hill climb for the first half an hour of the run was a little taxing, but once that was past it was great. Special thanks to Kathleen Richardson and Mark Kuhn for leading and sweeping for the group, your efforts were appreciated and Thanks to Suzanne, John and Derek for keeping me company. Did I mention that the water fall was HUGE!

Frontrunners are having a Customer appreciation Night on April 20th and we are all invited. That is also the last day at the store for Kari MacIntyre as she is leaving Nanaimo and moving to Victoria; so if for no other reason, come by and say good by to an amazing lady who has always been a strong supporter of ROC and who has had an impact on most of you if you have been running and training for any length of time in Nanaimo.

The World Harmony Run http://www.worldharmonyrun.org is on for Saturday May 7th. Still no details, sorry……Stay tuned.

Membership meeting – Please mark May 14th in your day timer. Open the attachment to read what the meeting is all about.

Membership Dues – those of you have been around for a while know that each year I put out the “the hit list” of members that haven’t paid their dues for the year. So, if you don’t want to be on “the list” please pay your dues quickly. You can either pay them to me, or to Owen or to Kelly or you can drop them off at Frontrunners. Please make sure your first and last name are accompanying any cash you are giving us. If you paid you membership dues after September of last year, please drop me a note as there was an arrangement made that new members paying in the later part of the year would be credited for that remaining portion of 2004 and all of 2005.

If you have decided that you no longer wish to be a member of ROC please drop me a note so I can remove your name from the membership list and the email address book. For those you that are basically forgetful and or lazy, get with it and pay. The list comes out the first week of May. That gives you 14 more days to pay.

A couple of race notes to pass along ….
a) The Subway Vancouver Island Relay takes place on Saturday, May 21st. We already have 8 teams and 2 ultra runners signed up for this fun event! Remember, the Bastion Running Club will pay the $375 team registration fee for the first 3 teams to sign up (all runners must be paid up members)! Ask anyone who participated the past few years about what it is like to be part of a relay team...it's an awesome feeling!....Runners of Compassion should put a Relay Team into this event.
b) The Nanaimo Regional Hospital Foundation 5k fun run will take place the following weekend on Sunday, May 29th at Bowen Park. This year's early bird prize will be a getaway packages at Tigh-N-Mara resort worth approximately $1000...yes a $1000 which includes the spa, dinners and lodging! Watch for the registration brochures which will be out shortly and register right away for this worthwhile fund raiser. I will be looking for volunteers from the club as well so let me know if you are interested. A special thank you to Runners of Compassion from The Hospital Foundation for again being one of the major sponsors of this event! Let’s get out and show our support by running in this year’s race.
c) The Duncan GutBuster is May 7th. This is the home of the original GutBuster race and is an amazing race route. This is a great race route that starts and finishes at a pub. Nice and close to Nanaimo. We should try and have a bunch of us go down.
d) The Kusim Climb is June 19th if you are looking for a some what tough mountain run. The Kusim Klimb is a wild and rugged 23 km loop heading up (meaning steep) and over Mount Kusim and down the Stowe Creek watershed. Elevation gain is a mile high over the first 6km of Bill=s Trail. Starting at sea level, participants pass through some of the most spectacular scenery on Vancouver Island with views of mountain peaks and the Johnstone Strait as they negotiate their way over the well developed trail. The loop includes hard packed hiking trails having steep inclines and declines, open slopped rock scrambling, deactivated gravel logging roads, alpine meadows with possible snow pack, and multiple creek crossings at various levels, unstable surfaces with possible obstacles such as fallen trees and boulders, and asphalt road surface (approx. 2.2km). Some sections are remote with no vehicle access. After a rural start at Sayward’s Heritage Hall participants will pass farms in the valley, old, 2nd and new growth forests, scenic view points on rock bluffs, and active logging sections. Four strategically placed checkpoints include first aid, support and direct contact to the race headquarters start and finish line. Two checkpoints will offer refreshments and one checkpoint will offer a hot lunch. Klimbers will be timed. Some will race; most will Klimb to the finish and brag about it!

Runners of Compassion technical tops – remember to email me if you think you might want one. It is so Stefan has a rough idea of how many to order. So far over 20 people have indicated that they want one…don’t be left out!

Okay the important stuff – The Run – This week the run will start from Westwood lake Parking lot at 7:00 am. One group (led by Kathleen & Brad) will be running long and will be out for about 1hr & 45min and another group (not sure who is leading yet) will be out for about 1hr & 15min in length. I don’t really know where either group are going, but wouldn’t be surprised if was a run of either the saddle or the ridges. The view from the ridges will be amazing. We actually ran the GutBuster route up on the ridges this afternoon (Tuesday) and it was beautiful. The same cannot be said for the new logging that is taking place on the far side of the creek….lots of new trees have been taken down.

Four Steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently

Message from NALT

Greetings All!

On Saturday night, a few yahoos made attempts to torch our lumber that has been donated and sitting at the end of Linley Road. Not only did they vandalize the piles, burnt a tarp etc.. but to add insult to injury may also have taken some for their own use.

What we have found that in the past is, when we used to stock pile lumber further in, it remains untouched as vandals tend to go for convenience where there's no walking involved.

On Friday we will be relocating the lumber a little further into the valley, roughly a few hundred yards. We are hoping that a few of you may have a couple of hours to spare starting at 10AM on Friday to help move the lumber. We'll be using a truck which will make the move a little easier.

If you are able to spare a bit of time on Friday, we'd be ever so grateful. Please respond to this email or call 714-1990 if you can come out to help.

As always, any volunteer time you could put in, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your past & continued support!!

Wendy Simms at Sea Otter

Our very own Wendy Simms ripped it up at the biggest Mountainbike race in North America last weekend. She placed 4th in the Super X-C, 11th in the Time Trial, 6th in the Short Track and an amazing 2nd in the Cross Country for a 3rd place overall!!

Check out some of the results and action on the following web pages:

Look for Sea Otter.

We will try to post some of the relevent links in the next couple of days.

Another delayed note from Dan the Trail Guy

A couple of things that I need to get out asap.

The Tuesday afternoon Trail run (one hour or there about) now starts at the Westwood Lake parking lot at 4:15 PM.

Yvonne Visser is looking for a female to be a member of her Snow to Surf relay team. I think she needs some one to run a down hill leg of the race. Please contact Yvonne directly.

Man oh man those new Energy Bars are good.

How did the new group structure work out for those of you that ran with us on Saturday?

I have to do a 2hr and 45min run on Saturday. Let me know if you are interested in doing a half (trail) and half (road) run for this length of time. I am planning on leaving Westwood, venturing over to Kilpatrick and Jameson Rd, through the Malaspina wood lot to Ammonite Falls, out through the gravel pit and then on to Jingle Pot Road. Jingle Pot back to Westwood. It should take just under three hours. Email me if you are interested?

Full Trail Bits will come out on Wednesday.

See ya,

Dan

Trail Bits
Great run up on the trails of Duomont. A Big Thank You to Derek, Dennis, and Owen for their great leading abilities. Everybody got in their necessary time and no one got lost or hurt and yes that was Brad that you saw sweeping for the whole run. Brad was over heard commenting how enjoyable the run is at the back of the pack. I wonder which other trail leaders we will see next at the back of the pack sweeping???? Great showing by the Nanaimo Trail runners at the Royal Roads GutBuster. A large number of Nanaimo addresses in the top 20. Stefan was second over all, John Lowen was fourth and Bobbie Jensen was third over all female. With the addition of Monti they took home the team trophy as well.

Frontrunners is having a Customer appreciation Night on April 20th and we are all invited…..open the attachment for details.

The World Harmony Run http://www.worldharmonyrun.org is on for Saturday May 7th. I won’t have further details until next week. Please let me know if you are interested and can help me organize this thing.

Membership meeting – Please mark May 14th in your day timer. There is going to be a very important Membership breakfast meeting of Runners of Compassion. Details will follow in the next week. The theme of the meeting will be “Funding”…..Who should we fund, how much should we fund them, etc, etc.

A couple of race notes to pass along from Steve Gagliano, President of Bastion ….

· Option # 1 – meet at Westwood lake at 6:30 AM run with me into Ammonite Falls and then heading out through the gravel pit for a road run…You must bring water and some food source – This is the 2hr & 45 min run
· Option # 2 - meet at Westwood Lake at 6:30 AM run with us into Ammonite Falls and then back out to Westwood. Brad and Kathleen will lead this group. This will take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. We will all run together until we get to the falls.

Attention Trans Canada Trail Users--Extension Ridge Trail--Abyss

From the offices of the RDN

Notice of Temporary Trail Closure

Weyerhaeuser has advised that harvesting will commence on their private lands in the vicinity of the Extension Ridge portion of the Trans Canada Trail, starting in late March (note from frontrunners; this has started).

A buffer area has been demarcated and no harvesting will occus withing the Trans Canada Trail corridor. However due to the proximity of the harvesting in places, Weyerhaeuser will be closing the Trail on a temporary basis from time to time.

Weyerhauser advises harvesting is due to start in late March, and may continue into late May 2005 or beyond.

The Regional District of Nanaimo and Trails B.C. have signed public access agreements with Weyehaeuser to allow the Trans Canada Trail access over private forest land. This access if subject to harvesting activities.

To guarantee your safety, and to ensure that the public trail access over private land can be quickly reinstated, please obey any trail closed signs.

Any inconvenience is regretted.

Thank you for your consideration.

Trail Bits

Lots of WOWS and THANK YOU NOTES from last weekend….and lots of stuff to tell you about.
Wow to the number of people that showed up last weekend for the run of Humility/Abyss. I think that there were at least 40 or more people in the three groups and Wow to Stefan for winning the Sooke River 10k on Sunday….what a stud!(he hates it when I call him that). Thank you notes to Charles (Charlie) Burrell and Derek Riley for taking care of Karla after she badly twisted her ankle early in the run. Thank you to Tim Stokes for again leading a group this weekend, your help is always appreciated, and Thank you to those of you that took turns sweeping at the back of the pack.

1. Thankfully we learnt on Saturday that Weyerhaeuser is going to leave the Trans Canada Trail intact and it appears that Humility will remain intact for the present time as well. Sadly though, the Cabin Connecter trail that branches off from the circle on the Trans Canada trail side will be lost or so it appears. We are still trying to confirm exactly what the cut plan is and we will let you know as soon as we know. We are also going to see if it is possible that we can get them to leave the Cabin Connector in place.

2. We (ROC) have been asked to take part in the World Harmony Run http://www.worldharmonyrun.org/ on the Saturday May 7th. The World Harmony Run is an around the world peace run. It isn’t a sponsored event and it doesn’t require us to raise funds, it only requires that we have members run with the torch as it makes its way from Victoria to Nanaimo. From here it will work its way across Canada and around the world. We will be partnering with the Victoria Chapter of Runners of Compassion which will run the torch from Victoria to Duncan where we will take over. Our portion is about 53 km. I figure if we break it into 5 km legs we will need 22 people (2 running together for company). Are there 22 of you that will volunteer to run a leg? I will if you will? Please let me know if you are interested and can help me organize this thing.

3. Gary Croome - a new ROC member has asked me to pass along the following information to all of you. If you fit the bill please respond to him directly at garycroome@shaw.ca Hi Gary, I'm doing an article for Boulevard about "voluntourism" where people go on vacation to contribute their time and energy to a charitable cause. Shaula figured you might know a few people at Runners of Compassion who have been involved in these kinds of things? Let me know if you can think of anyone I can get in touch with. Mucho gracias. Alex

4. This Saturday is the Royal Roads GutBuster in Victoria. If you are planning on going down, let me know and I will try and arrange car pooling. I am still a tentative to go.

5. ABS Class –Sean Lunny is going to be offering a MONDAY MORNING ABS & Stretching class starting April 18th. This one is 6 weeks long. Limit is 20 people. Time is 6:30 am. The cost is $20.00. If you are interested please contact Sean at seanlunny@shaw.ca you will be amazed at the difference that it makes to your running when your core is in shape, just ask anyone who has taken the clinic.

6. The 24 Carrot on the Run Energy Bar is now in full production and is available from Alex’s shop. All the bars have the Runners of Compassion logo on them and ROC receives .50 from each bar she sells……buy lots.

7. Run For Life – May 29th. ROC is again proud to be a sponsor of the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation 5km Run for Life. Mark the date in your calendar and watch for more details coming soon.

8. Crimson Coast Dance Festival Fund Raiser – A personal note here. This Scotch, Beer and Wine Tasting which is held at the Dorchester Hotel on the night April the 15th from 5:00pm to 8:00 pm is a personal favorite of mine, even though I don’t dance nor does my daughter. I do drink though!!! This is an event that will offer new experiences in food and tasting pleasures. Chef Shawn will prepare sumptuous and abundant dishes with Fanny Bay Oysters, locally caught salmon, cheeses from Quality Foods, and with fresh ingredients from their own kitchens. They have added more breweries; Longwood Brew Pub, Fat Cat Brewery, Vancouver Island Brewery and Okanagan Springs. Their scotches include selections from peaty to refined by Pernod Riccard’s and from Independent Wines and Spirits; Old Pulteney 12 year old Single Malt Scotch, Catto Rare Old Scottish Highland Whisky, and Schneider Weisse Wheat Beer, Munich Germany.

For all the wine drinking aficionados, Saturna Island Wineries will bring their own; Pinot Gris 2003, Chardonnay 2002, Pinot Noir/Gamay Noir blend, Cabernet Franc 2002, along with Hester Creek’s VQA; Trebbiano 2003, Pinot Blanc 2003, Merlot 2002, Cabernet Merlot 2002

Auction items range from design consulting to computer consulting to weekend getaways! Tickets are only $35.00

Funds raised from this event support the free dance activities programmed by The Crimson Coast Dance Society. Tickets are available at either the Longwood Brew Pub or through me personally.

Okay the important stuff – The Run Location! This weeks run is going to be a 75 minute of the Dumont Trails. 7:00 AM at the yellow gate.

Confidence is the inner voice that says you are becoming what you are capable of being.
